Horrible histories-Groovy Greeks

Author:Terry Deary

The Spartan chidren were kept hungry. They were then encouraged to steal food-sneakinessis a good skill if you are out on the battlefield. If they were caught stealing they would be beaten. They were not beaten for stealing, you understand-they were beaten for being careless enough to get caught. Sometimes the young men were beaten just to toughen them up.If the beating killed the youth then it was just bad luck.

The last Battle

Author:C.S.Lewis
A terrible figure was coming towards them.It was much smaller than the shape they had seen from the tower, though still bigger than a man,and it was the same.It had a vulture's head and four arms. Its beak was open and its eyes were blazed.A croaking voice came from its beak.

Treasure island

Author:Robert Louis Stevenson

"No sir:not money,I think,"replied I,"in fact sir,I think I have the thing in my breast-pocket;and to tell you the truth,I should like to get it put in safety."

The voyage of the Dawn Treader

Author:C.S.Lewis

Every man rushed to his weapon, but there was nothing to be done, the monster was out of reach."Shoot!Shoot!"cried the master bowman, and several obeyed, but the arrows glanced off the sea serpent's hide as if it was iron-plated.Then,for a dreadful minute, everyone was still, staring up into it's eyes and mouth wondering where it would pounce.

About The Snowy Owl

The plumage of these owls enable them to blend in well in the tundra reigon where they occour. In this harsh envirorment, their numbers are closely related to the availability of their prey, and their population increases rapidly when lemmings are rife. Once the lemming population declines, however, so does that of the snowy owls, and breeding success is greatly reduced, so that pairs may not nest at all in some years. Adult birds are likely to be forced to abandon their usual territories at this time and have to fly south in search of other sources of food. Unusually, snowy owls are active during the daytime.

The mysterious Benedict Society

author:Trenton Lee Stewart

"No great matter,"Milligan said,"I only had to hold my breath for a few minutes to dig down the mud into the stream, drag myself upstream, and then dig through more mud and ,oh,about a foot of clay. After that it was only a question of tearing out a few stones, pryingapart a few boards, chiseling through some mortar, bending the bars of a metal grateenough to squeeze through(that's how i broke my arm.),then incapacitating the guards and using their keys to unlock my shackles.Really, it's quite simple once you know the trick."

The magician's nephew

author:C.S.Lewis

The horse shied,it just it might hae shied in the old, miserable days when it pulled a hansom. Then it roared. It strained its neck as if there was a fly biting its shoulders and it wanted to scratch them. And then, just as the beasts had burst out of the ground, there burst out from the shoulders of Fledge wings that spreadand grew, largerthan eagles',larger than swans',larger than angels' wings in church windows. The wings shone chestnut colour and copper colour. He gave a great sweep with them and leapt into the air.Twenty feet above ASlan and Digory he snorted, neighed, and curvetted. Then, after circling once round them,he dropped to the earth, all four hooves together, looking awkward and surprised, but extremely pleased.

The magician's nephew

"You are no magician. The mark of it is not on you.You must be only the servant of a magician. It is on another's magic that you have travelled here."

"And I supposeyou've sent Polly into it then," said Digory. His cheeks were flaming with anger now."And all I can say,"he added,"Even if you are my uncle-is that you've behaved like a coward, sending a girl to a place you're afraid to go yourself."
